Core Competencies
Scientific Communication Competencies for the Research Team
Scientific Communication Competencies for the Research Team is a framework that describes the skills and knowledge that clinical and translational research teams need to communicate successfully. It was built utilizing our experience as well as input from faculty experts and professional educators/instructional designers.
This framework consists of:
- Five Competency Domains
- Competency domains are broad categories of knowledge that organize the framework. The competency domains that we use are: Get Funded, Write Effectively, Deliver Authentically, Visualize Science, and Grow Professionally.
- Five Cross-Cutting Competencies
- Cross-cutting competencies span all five domains and cover essential practices that are necessary regardless of the context or communication modality.
- 135 Core Competency Statements
- The competency statements list the skills and knowledge that clinical and translational research teams need to communicate effectively
All team members, in all roles and ranks, have a responsibility to support the common goal of successfully communicating research. While individual contributors are unlikely to have expertise in every domain, teams can collectively satisfy these competencies by seeking input from contributors with diverse skill sets and interests. We encourage both individual contributors and research teams to use this competency framework as a self-assessment tool to identify existing strengths and opportunities for learning and growth.
