Core Competencies

Scientific Communication Competencies for the Research Team

Scientific Communication Competencies for the Research Team is a framework that describes the skills and knowledge that clinical and translational research teams need to communicate successfully. It was built utilizing our experience as well as input from faculty experts and professional educators/instructional designers.

This framework consists of:

  • Five Competency Domains
    • Competency domains are broad categories of knowledge that organize the framework. The competency domains that we use are: Get Funded, Write Effectively, Deliver Authentically, Visualize Science, and Grow Professionally.
  • Five Cross-Cutting Competencies
    • Cross-cutting competencies span all five domains and cover essential practices that are necessary regardless of the context or communication modality.
  • 135 Core Competency Statements
    • The competency statements list the skills and knowledge that clinical and translational research teams need to communicate effectively

All team members, in all roles and ranks, have a responsibility to support the common goal of successfully communicating research. While individual contributors are unlikely to have expertise in every domain, teams can collectively satisfy these competencies by seeking input from contributors with diverse skill sets and interests. We encourage both individual contributors and research teams to use this competency framework as a self-assessment tool to identify existing strengths and opportunities for learning and growth.

This framework, in the shape of a wheel, is designed to help clinical and translational research teams communicate successfully. It is made up of five broad categories called competency domains. The wheel shows each of the competency domains broken out into individual pieces of the wheel. Domain one is Get Funded, domain two is Write Effectively, domain three is Deliver authentically, domain four is visualize science, and domain five is grow professionally. In the middle of the wheel, is a circle that says "Cross-Cutting Competences. Define your communication goals, know your audience, practice cultural awareness, tell a story, and invite feedback." This circle represents that the cross-cutting competences span all five domains.
