3.1 Adapt delivery of oral presentations based on context.
a. Customize delivery based on audience (e.g., mentors, peers, students, patients, public, funders/VCs).
b. Customize delivery based on modality (e.g., virtual, in-person, audio and video mediums).
c. Recognize and follow the standard formats and expectations for a given type of talk (e.g., research talk, poster presentation, panel discussion, classroom lecture, media interview, funder pitch/conversation).
d. Describe the relationship between their research and that of peers in their field (e.g, relevance/implications, broader social context).
3.2 Demonstrate effective delivery techniques.
a. Recognize their personal verbal and non-verbal communication style (e.g., clarity, volume, engagement).
b. Use technology to their advantage.
c. Manage time and pacing of content.
d. Employ transitions and bridges between topics.
e. Use metaphors to simplify complex concepts.
f. Use inclusive language (i.e., consider who might be excluded, acknowledge historical contexts, consider how your language will be interpreted).
g. Rehearse repeatedly and solicit feedback on delivery to build confidence and fluency.
h. Engage with the audience (i.e., handle Q&A, invite interactivity).
3.3 Clearly articulate science to non-scientists.
a. Use effective strategies for communicating with government agencies and officials about policy.
b. Utilize guidelines for speaking with the media.
3.4 Utilize an elevator pitch.
a. Create and always have ready an elevator pitch using a standard structure.
b. Recognize when to use their elevator pitch.
c. Customize delivery based on goal and audience (e.g., seeking collaborations, funding, etc.).
3.5 Responsibly communicate with research participants.
a. Maintain communication with research participants throughout all phases of a research study (e.g., recruitment, informed consent, data collection, dissemination of findings).
