Competent scientific communicators…

1.1  Cultivate a diverse research funding portfolio.

a.  Identify appropriate funding mechanisms for their field, focus, and specific study.

b.  Network and establish relationships with funders (or potential funders), including philanthropists and representatives from foundations, industry, and government agencies.

c.  Build relationships with collaborators within their institution, their city, their region, and beyond (both within and across disciplines).

1.2  Craft rigorous grant proposals.

a. Recognize the structure of the grant mechanism(s) and expectations of the funding source (federal, industry, foundation, and philanthropic) to which they are applying.

b. Utilize an organized process for writing grants.

c. Articulate how their science is connected to the missions of funding sources.

d. Solicit input from community partners, intended beneficiaries or users of the research findings, and project officers.

e. Describe the allocation of grant resources in budgets and project timelines.

f. Implement a communication plan to support their time and project management.

1.3  Edit grants proposals effectively.

a. Collect and respond to feedback from a diverse set of people throughout their grant preparations (e.g. from mentors and peers).

1.4  Navigate the grant review and resubmission process.

a. Recognize when and how to submit grants.

b. Recognize when and how to resubmit grants.

c. Address reviewer/study section feedback in resubmissions.

1.5  Develop relationships with key support offices/roles to optimize proposal content & submission/resubmission  processes. 

a. Proactively communicate with their institution’s grants administrators.

b. Proactively communicate with the funding mechanism’s program officer or equivalent individual.
