Course Goals

Leadership Essentials for Staff on Research Teams aims to prepare emerging leaders in staff roles to maximize the quality and impact of their collaborative work with teams. This in-person, one-day training features a combination of didactic and interactive sessions that explore best practices for overseeing and empowering teams, and navigating a career path in the clinical and translational science workforce. Participants will learn from industry experts and staff practitioners, with a focus on identifying practical solutions for their leadership challenges. 

Session topics include:

  • Exploring communication styles and strategies
  • Managing difficult conversations
  • Fostering mutually-beneficial mentoring relationships
  • Developing a personal plan for leadership development and growth

June 11, 2025 ET | 9:00am – 5:00pm

Time commitment

This is a one-day workshop that will take place in person at Harvard Medical School. Up to one hour of pre-work will be required of all participants.

Audience

Staff on teams who: 1) oversee people and/or projects, 2) have limited leadership training, and 3) are interested in building their leadership skills.

We believe that the research community is strengthened by understanding how a number of factors including gender identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, culture, religion, national origin, language, disability, and age shape the environment in which we live and work, affect each of our personal identities, and impacts all areas of human health.

Eligibility

  • Staff who are members of teams/groups and have leadership responsibilities, including any of the following:
    • Managing one or more direct report(s)
    • Other leadership roles without direct reporting lines, such as a project or team lead
  • Ideal participants are either:
    • New to leadership with less than two years of experience or 
    • Expecting to transition to a leadership role in six to twelve months.
  • Priority will be given to individuals affiliated with Harvard schools and institutions.

Fee
