K12 Training Award

The K12 Training Award program provides advanced training in clinical and translational research to senior fellows and junior faculty from all health professions represented by Harvard Catalyst, including medicine, dentistry, and nursing.

Awardees will pursue a mentored research project in their area of expertise. It is expected that the research performed within the K12 program will provide the basis for an independent NIH award (e.g., K23, KO8, or RO1).

Awardees will also pursue an educational program that fulfills the mission of the program and provides optimal training in their chosen career objectives. They may do this by taking part in the courses found in LearnResearch where applicable, or by participating in Harvard Catalyst-based courses.

Awardees are additionally required to participate in Harvard Catalyst’s Grant Review and Support Program (GRASP) and will be automatically enrolled in the program.

Mentoring and Program Oversight

Each awardee will work with their mentor to develop and execute a work plan for their research project. Mentors must be accomplished investigators in clinical and translational research and have a track record of success in training new investigators and fostering their success as independent researchers. An advisory committee will connect each awardee with a group of experienced clinicians and researchers to provide additional resources in the fields of genetics, biostatistics, biomarkers, and imaging.

Time commitment

Two years — October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2026

Mentored clinical and translational research and education.

Eligibility

• Research or health-professional doctoral degree
• Junior faculty within the first three years of appointment or senior fellowship appointment at a Harvard-affiliated institution
• Hold a full time position at a Harvard-affiliated institution

Funding Level

• Two years of salary support at 75% of the awardee’s institutional salary base, up to the K12 NIH salary cap of $160,000 (i.e., $120,000 would be covered)
• Surgeons may request salary support of between 50% and 75%
• Educational programs within Harvard Catalyst will be tuition-free
