Harvard Catalyst Website Login Help

Why is login sometimes required?

While Harvard Catalyst endeavors to provide public access to as much of its website as possible, certain sections of the Harvard Catalyst website do require users to log in. Login may be required when the information available is only intended to be shared internally within the Harvard Catalyst community or there is a need to uniquely identify an individual using Harvard Catalyst services (for instance, to allow for user-specific functions like editing one's Profiles entry).

Two authentication methods are used on the Harvard Catalyst website:

  • Harvard ID (aka Harvard PIN)

  • HMS eCommons ID
(Please note: The HMS eCommons ID is the login for the Harvard Medical School network, and is not the same as the NIH eRA Commons ID.)

Whenever possible, Harvard Catalyst modules allow login by either method in order to serve the broadest community. In some circumstances, however, we are unable to offer Harvard ID login due to technical, regulatory, or policy constraints. Therefore, certain tools and services (e.g., PSL, Grant Central, In/Outpatient Resources requests) are currently limited to HMS eCommons ID login only.

We are pursuing solutions to expand access wherever feasible, and will make announcements via our News page whenever we are able to do so.

Which ID am I eligible for?

If you are a faculty, staff, or student member of Harvard Medical School, you are eligible for both an HMS eCommons ID and a Harvard ID user login.

If you are faculty or staff at one of the HMS hospital affiliates, you are eligible for an HMS eCommons ID user login.

If you are a faculty, staff, or student member of any other Harvard University school, you are eligible for a Harvard ID user login.

If you are a member of Harvard Catalyst from another institution (e.g., MIT, Boston College), you are eligible for an HMS eCommons Invited User account. To obtain an account, contact your counterpart within HMS to initiate the process. If you are unsure who your counterpart is or do not have one, see “What to do if I've tried all of the above” for who to contact.

How do I register for an account or resolve login problems?

For Harvard ID: http://www.pin.harvard.edu/

For HMS eCommons ID: http://ecommons.med.harvard.edu/

What do I do if I’ve tried all of the above and I am still having problems logging in?
