Biomedical Informatics Training

Biomedical Informatics Training The Biomedical Informatics Research Training Program (BIRT) is a consortium of laboratories at Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and Tufts Medical Center. BIRT enables individuals with different backgrounds to acquire a level of knowledge and skills in competency areas necessary for biomedical informatics research.

Biomedical Informatics Training Program

The Boston-area Biomedical Informatics Research Training (BIRT) program is a consortium of leading informatics laboratories at Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and Tufts and is supported by a grant from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. For United States citizens and permanent residents, fellowships provide stipend, tuition, and travel funds, and are typically for two to three year periods. Trainees are primarily associated with a particular informatics laboratory, depending on research interests.

The BIRT program consists of formal didactic coursework, a seminar series, and a mentored biomedical informatics research project. In addition, the program provides many opportunities for educational, research, and collegial interaction among the faculty, students, and fellows of the training sites through the Harvard Medical School Center for Biomedical Informatics.

Advanced degrees at Harvard and MIT are possible through the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. Predoctoral fellowships are available for accepted students at MIT and the Harvard School of Public Health. Postdoctoral applicants are encouraged to apply for the MS Degree concurrently with their applications for fellowship.
